• Singapore Island is about 42 km east to west and 23 km north to south.
• The Total Land Area is 647.5 sq km.
• Singapore is a republic with a parliamentary system of government. A written constitution provides for the organs of state, namely the executive, the legislature and the judiciary. The President is the Head of State. The Prime Minister leads the Cabinet in the administration of the Government. The President appoints the Prime Minister and the other Cabinet members from among the Members of Parliament (MPs). [funny how I always had the idea it was the PM who 'chose' the President...hmmm....]

• The population consists of 77% Chinese, 14% Malays, 7.6% Indians and 1.4% other ethnic groups
• In 1998, the number of live-births was 43838 and deaths were 15656.
• In the same year, there were 18971 registered marriages.
• The Official Language in Singapore are English (language of administration), Malay(national language), Chinese and Tamil.
